You Are In Control: International Conference for Creatives in the Digital World

You Are In Control is an annual international conference returning for the fifth year running to provide a necessary platform for exploring digital business developments in the Creative Industries. This year the conference will take place between October 10th – 12th in Reykjavik's brand new centrally-located concert hall and conference centre Harpa.

Topics this year: Industry professionals will present and discuss various current topics on matters such as collaborative creativity, cross-platforming, engagement marketing, open source and copyright. Besides the very experienced speakers there will be workshops during the conference that will provide different perspectives and discussions on how to adapt to the rapidly changing digital distribution world.

Speakers this year include:

  • Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard (UK) who have been shaping the future of digital and creative marketing. They are very successful artists whose work often intersects with music, including collaborations with J. Spaceman (Spiritualized), Plan B and Scanner. Jane is currently Head of Strategy at the Beggars Group, the UK´s largest group of independent record labels and has been developing innovative and creative marketing strategies for artists such as Radiohead, The White Stripes, Adele and Pixies. Her work for the company has landed her 5 Digital Music Awards. Iain has over 10 years experience as Head of Digital at the Mute Label, including the years with EMI. Throughout that time he has worked with a wide range of artists including Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp and Moby. Their website is http://www.iainandjane.com.
  • Ralph Simon (US) is regarded as one of the founders of the modern mobile entertainment industry. He is the CEO of the Mobilium Advisory Group which offers advise to the various organizations and well known artists such as Lady Gaga, U2 and Madonna. Ralph is also the Chairman Emeritus and Founder of the Mobile Entertainment Forum and has helped form the mobile entertainment and content industry by being a prominent global mobile trailblazer and innovator.
  • Robert Levine (US) was the executive editor of Billboard and has written for Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, and the Arts and Business sections of the New York Times. Before that, he was a Features Editor at New York magazine and Wired. He holds a B.A. in politics from Brandeis and an M.S.J. From Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. He now covers the culture business from New York and Berlin. Free Ride is his first book, which is about how digital parasites are destroying the culture business and how the culture business can fight back.
  • Staci Slater (US) is the founder of Talent House Inc, a high profile film and television licensing, clearance and pithing company. Staci will be leading a workshop at the conference and sharing her vast experience on these subjects.
  • Mathias Klang (SE) is the Project Lead for Creative Commons Sweden and a researcher and senior lecturer at the University of Göteborg. His research revolves around the field of legal informatics with particular interest in copyright, online expression, digital rights and regulation. Currently he is researching these areas in relation to Social Media as well as blogging at digital-rights.net and tweets under the alias @klang67
  • Tilman Scheel (GE) is the Managing Director of Reelport GmbH a groundbreaking company within film distribution. The company has professionalized the digital concept and protecting film makers´ copyrights. Tilman also created Europe´s Finest with the support of MEDIA. Europe’s Finest has by now acquired the Pan-European rights to more than 70 film classics and a dozen current Cannes and Berlin participants, digitized them in 2k DCI cinema format and is offering them to the digital theatres across Europe.

The Art of Networking

...The Creative Hub has invited two speakers to share their insights on the art of networking.

Jesper "Yebo" Reginal (DK) has as a drummer and co-founder of Crunchy Frog Recordings been working with numerous musicians and bands, including The Raveonettes & Junior Senior. Yebo will join us for a talk about how he has established himself as creative entrepreneur by combining his musical talent with proactive networking, and provide us with some pointers on how to navigate in the music industry on a national and international scale.

Ruth Daniels (UK)
Ruth is co-founder and Director of Unconvention and Fat Northern Records. Unconvention is an international grassroots music conference, aiming to bring together likeminded individuals to discuss the future of Independent music. Unconvention has so far been successfully held in India, England, Columbia, Australia and the Netherlands. She co-founded Fat Northern Records in 2003, and was also shortlisted for the UK Young Music Entrepreneur in 2008. Ruth will join us for a talk about how she used her network to bring Unconvention to other countries, and provide us with some insights on how she gets involved with new networks and creative business opportunities.

International Conference on Cultural Policy Research

The University of Jyväskylä hosts the 6th International Conference on Cultural Policy Research ICCPR2010 in collaboration with the International Journal of Cultural Policy in 24 - 27 August 2010.

The conference has received a record number of proposals and more than 200 researchers from over 35 countries have been accepted to present their papers at the ICCPR2010.

The main topic Truths, Taboos and Myths of Cultural Policy and accepted proposals explore various aspects of cultural policy, among others:

Artist policy, Cultural participation, Cultural diversity, Democracy and cultural policy, Cultural/creative industries and economy Politics, values and ethics of cultural policy Politics of heritage/memories History of cultural policy New technologies and culture Cultural sustainability Culture and economy Comparative cultural policy

Leading world experts will share the latest research on cultural policy.
The ICCPR2010 has a great line-up of keynote speakers including:

- Prof. Motti Regev (The Open University of Israel): Cultural policy, cultural markets and aesthetic cosmopolitanism.
- Dr. Jeremy Ahearne (University of Warwick): Myths, taboos and truths in cultural policy: Questions of religion.
- Lecturer Miikka Pyykkönen (University of Jyväskylä): Politics of
culture: Dancing on the axes of narrow/wide, political/"policycal".

Aiming at tuning new perspectives and alternatives to policies, parallel panels will tackle 'hot topics', among others:

- Who will die for Europe?
- On cultural policy as identity policy.
- Earning on or giving up intellectual property.

Prof. David Throsby (Macquarie University) will chair a plenary panel on Cultural policy in a changing world: Nordic and other models.

The Baltic Sea Region can no longer compete with major players elsewhere on price alone. The creative industries, based on innovation, design, culture and experience economy are among the fastest growing sectors in Europe and in the whole world. Where does the Baltic Sea Region stand in this competition? There is a wealth of design talent and creative firms in the region. How do we do better and facilitate further development and growth?

The agenda of the conference will highlight questions related to sustainable economic growth, competitiveness, jobs creation and financial recovery. Energy and climate change, economic relations with the Eastern neighbors and Northern Dimension will be the part of the Summit programme that will also include the most pressing issues that are on the agenda of the business, including innovation, research and development and transport.

The conference will have an exhibition and networking village which will be an improved venue for cross-country, cross-sector and cross-level encounters, discussions and debates. We will continue with new initiatives that will create an even more dynamic and creative atmosphere in Networking Village where many different events and activities will be taking place. Summit participants will be invited to join parallel sessions, interviews, discussions, company briefings, book presentations and other activities in Networking Village, which will be open during the both days of the Summit.
